| Materials | Aluminium, steel or stainless steel |
| Area of use | Travels usually from 5 to over 100 metres (e.g. crane systems, conveyor technology) |
| Accessories | Glide bars on the trough walls reduce wear and noise |
A guide trough is used when the travel is so long that the energy chain exceeds its unsupported length. The energy chain is guided in a gliding application.
Typical signs for the use of a guide trough:
The following parameters are required for the design of a trough system:
Which guide trough is the right one?
| Required | Recommended solution |
|---|---|
| General mechanical engineering | Aluminium SuperTrough Basic |
| Demanding plant engineering | Aluminium SuperTrough Heavy duty |
| High mechanical load | Steel trough |
| Harsh environment | Steel trough |
| For crane girders | guidefast |

Not every application requires a classic guide trough. For certain long travels, igus offers self-guiding energy chain systems such as autoglide. Depending on the system, travels of up to 80m are possible without a classic guide trough.
