Stubble working equipment in agriculture, known as cultivators, used to be used primarily for weed control. Today, their main use is to loosen the arable land, mix in organic matter and prepare it for the next sowing. The "Karat 9" from Lemken GmbH und Co KG in Alpen is an intensive cultivator that can be used for shallow, medium-deep and deep cultivation, depending on the requirements and work step. Lemken uses lubrication-free plastic bearings from igus at the bearing points, which completely eliminate the need for subsequent lubrication.
"The working time alone which users save due to the maintenance-free plain bearings, is a very strong argument in favour of plastic bearings for us today. We will continue to rely on plain bearings from igus in the future. Because, what is proven will be retained by us, that's for sure."
Lars Heier, Head of Marketing, Lemken GmbH
In 2008, the Karat was Lemken's first application to be produced with lubrication-free iglidur plain bearings. Previously, Lemken had used DU bushings in its machines. "At the beginning, everyone smiled at us over the Karat cultivator because we wanted to use plastic at the bearing point," admits Lars Heier. "Today, depending on the load, we only have to replace the plastic bearings every few years, which is another cost advantage in addition to saving on lubricant." Since this pioneering project, numerous other Lemken machines have been equipped with iglidur plain bearings. The collaboration between the two companies works very well: igus tests its own materials extensively in its own test laboratory in Cologne, where various bearing materials are combined with different shaft materials in order to be able to calculate the coefficient of friction and wear as precisely as possible. Lemken also tests the products specifically for its requirements at its own site in Alpen.
