Lubrication-free linear axes for an e-scooter lift in Deutsche Bahn's idea train

Deutsche Bahn's idea train is an initiative that presents new ideas for passenger transport. On the platform, the partner companies are developing specific concepts that show convenient transportation in the future.
Arnold AG's lift for e-scooters now shows how to hang up the two-wheelers on a train and charge them directly as needed. We supply the linear technology for lifting and lowering the scooters electrically. drylin linear systems with drive allow quiet, compact, robust, lubrication-free operation.

Profile

  • What was needed: drylin SLW linear module with stepper motor
  • Requirements: Lubrication-free, compact, robust storage of e-scooters with electric drive
  • Industry: railway technology
  • Success for the customer: Since drylin linear systems require no external lubrication, the mechanism attracts no dirt and is durable.
Idea train

Problem

New, innovative approaches that make rail travel even more pleasant. This idea led to the "idea train", a Deutsche Bahn development platform for tomorrow's passenger transport. Interactive film on the window panes, seating areas that can be adjusted to load, and areas with work counters. The ideas are diverse and show trends for the future.
Another idea is a lift for e-scooters, which, installed close to the entrance and exit, serves as both parking space and charging station. Arnold AG, a metalworking specialist, dedicated itself to implementing the concept and was looking for a suitable linear rail on which the scooter could be raised easily and electrically.
The challenges: The solution had to be compact, robust, and fail-safe.

Solution

To put the innovative e-scooter lift concept into practice, Arnold AG uses our drylin SLW 25120, a linear system consisting of hard-anodised rails with an aluminium double shaft profile, carriages, stepper motors, and control system.
The advantages for installation on trains are obvious: The drylin rails are ideal for compact installation in the service wall in the entry and exit area and are also completely lubrication-free. Since scooters bring dirt from outside onto the lift, and lubricants attract dirt, it was essential that no lubricants be used. The plastic from which the sliding elements are made also has dampening properties, allowing smooth operation. And since the drive is self-locking, the lift stays securely in the desired position.
After the system was quickly put into operation, the concept was successfully tested. And the function is very simple: The user hooks up the scooter and presses a button that drives the lead screw, pulling the scooter upwards.
